ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS AND HEALTH PROCESS QUALIFICATION:

A STUDY ON TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTANCE AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT IN A TEACHING CLINIC

Abstract

Digital transformation in healthcare has driven significant changes in service organization, particularly through the implementation of information systems and electronic patient records. These technologies facilitate the organization, integration, and accessibility of clinical information, thereby enhancing professional communication, decision-making, and the quality of both clinical care and management processes. This study aimed to understand the perceptions held by users of a university-based dental teaching clinic regarding the adoption of electronic patient records and their contribution to improving health information processes. This is a descriptive, exploratory study with a quantitative approach, conducted with members of the academic and institutional community of a dental teaching clinic at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire covering users' experience with digital technologies, their familiarity with electronic patient records, and their perceptions regarding the benefits of these records for information management, communication, and institutional activities. The results revealed a positive perception among participants regarding the potential of electronic patient records to support data organization, integrate work processes, and improve inter-departmental communication. The study concludes that adopting electronic patient records represents an organizational shift that relies not only on technological infrastructure but also on user training, workflow adaptation, and professional acceptance to ensure effective utilization.

Author Biographies

Talita Araújo de Andrade, UFRN

She has been a technical-administrative staff member at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) since 2017. She holds a Master's degree in Institutional Process Management from UFRN (2023), a Licentiate degree in Chemistry from UFRN (2013), and a Bachelor's degree in Aquaculture from UFRN (2009). Her areas of interest include Information Science applied to health, information management and architecture, and organizational processes in healthcare.

Adriano Charles da Silva Cruz, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte

Adriano Cruz completed postdoctoral research in Communication at the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo (ECA/USP, 2018) and at the Federal University of Pernambuco (2025). He holds a PhD in Languages ​​and Culture from the Federal University of Paraíba and a Master’s degree in Communication from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), having undertaken academic exchange periods at Université Paris Nanterre, Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas, and USP. He is an Associate Professor IV in the Department of Social Communication at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte and a permanent faculty member of the Graduate Program in Institutional Process Management and the Graduate Program in Media Studies. His work focuses on organizational communication, communication management, and digital media, with an emphasis on communication strategies, institutional processes, and meaning-making within organizations.

Mônica Karina Santos Reis, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte

Holds undergraduate degrees in Library and Information Science (2006) and Education (2020) from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Completed specializations in Strategic Information Systems Management (2010) and Educational Technologies (2019) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Earned a Doctorate (2018) and a Master’s degree (2013) in Education from the Graduate Program in Education at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte's Center of Education. A permanent researcher with the Complexity Studies Group (GRECOM) and currently a member of the Public Education Observatory research group at the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Norte. Works as a public servant, holding the position of Librarian-Documentalist at the Prof. Alberto Moreira Campos Sectoral Library (Department of Dentistry, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte) since 2009; also served as a Substitute Professor (2021–2023 and 2025–2026) in the Department of Educational Foundations and Policies at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte's Center of Education. Research interests include information competence, information literacy, indexing, database searching, research methodologies, teaching and learning, educational psychology, active learning methodologies, gamification, and educational technologies.
