Abstract

Since its beginnings, the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) has been periodically revised and published to reflect advances in health, science and society. This text aims to present the characteristics of the ICD, the main innovations of the ICD-11, as well as presenting the challenges for its implementation. Therefore, a descriptive study was developed based on official documents and technological reference tools for understanding the ICD and its different versions. In general terms, ICD-11 included six new chapters, reformulated its alphanumeric code, instituted post-coordination, and established the possibility of a condition being visualized in more than one class. For the ICD-11 to be adopted in Brazil, investments are needed to translate the classification to Portuguese, to provide information technology infrastructure, to qualify human resources for the use of the ICD-11, to increase users’ informational and technological competence, to perform terminological research, and to disseminate the ICD-11, as has already been done in other countries.
